Conservative Dental Treatments
In conservative dental treatment, decay occurring in the enamel and dentin parts of the tooth is cleaned using special tools used in dentistry. Afterwards, the remaining healthy tooth tissues are preserved, and the tooth is filled in a way that will replicate its original structure, restoring the tooth’s original function.
Factors Creating Tooth Decay
1- Bacterial plaque 2- Carbohydrate-rich foods 3- Inherent factors 4- Duration of food remaining in the mouth
Diagnosis and Diagnosis Methods
Tooth decay can occur on the chewing surface of the tooth, in the interdental areas where teeth touch each other, or in the neck regions of the teeth. Brown discoloration or cavities that form on surfaces visible to the eye are easily detectable. However, X-ray diagnosis is also required for decay that has not caused these symptoms.
Decay starting in the enamel progresses to the dentin if left untreated. Dentin is a structure that dissolves more easily than enamel, hence the decay progression is faster.
If the pain becomes constant, the decay has advanced to the pulp layer where the nerve-vascular bundle of the decayed tooth is located, and root canal treatment is required.
Treatment Methods
Bonding
Bonding is a procedure performed to correct minor problems in teeth without causing any damage to them.
It aims to enhance the appearance of the teeth, contributing to smile aesthetics.
Sometimes teeth may be excessively large or small. The color may not be as desired. In such cases, Bonding can provide a new look to the tooth with minor additions.
Bonding can be easily applied to close unwanted gaps between teeth, and for shape and color changes on teeth. It is a method used to close gaps between two or more teeth.
It is also preferred in cases where a person’s tooth is broken due to any impact, fall, etc., and porcelain application cannot be performed. It can even be successfully applied when half of the tooth is broken.
If there are no issues with the teeth (like decay), anesthesia is not necessary. No pain or discomfort is felt during this procedure. There is no need for abrasion on the teeth before the procedure.
This procedure, which adds aesthetics to a person’s smile and corrects minor tooth problems, is often performed in a single session. Depending on the size of the aesthetic procedure to be performed in one session, it varies between 15 minutes and 1 hour. However, the number of sessions to be applied can vary from person to person and according to the procedure to be applied.
Composite Filling
Composite filling is generally used in our clinic.
It is a plastic mixture containing silica dioxide particles. It is not noticeable in the tooth with various color options and is also called aesthetic-white filling. The material, which was once used only for front teeth, has been reinforced with various methods to make it suitable for back teeth as well. The filling material placed on the tooth using a special bonding agent is hardened with a light device, and polishing is done in the same session.
Porcelain Filling (Inlay-Onlay)
In porcelain fillings, an impression is taken from the prepared cavity and sent to the laboratory. When the patient comes to the next session, the polished porcelain filling is bonded to the cavity.
